Getting internet and TV in Dublin

Once you have an apartment, I presume you will also have the bank account. There are several internet providers in Dublin and the list is growing:

-          NTL

-          Eircom

You should shop around for the prices and various internet speeds that will suit your purposes. Most of the providers offer bundles with TV and telephone. It is highly unlikely that you will need a landline telephone if you are planning on having a cell phone. Beware that calls to landlines and cell phones are charged differently by providers.

In most cases, internet providers will give you a discount if you book your installation online. This, however, means that you may need to wait for the technician to be available.

Most providers give you a discount if you sign up for direct debit – where the monthly fee is automatically deducted from your bank account.

If you only have one computer at home and a laptop at that, you may be better off signing up for mobile internet stick with any of the internet and cell phone providers. The fees are comparable and there is the convenience factor of being mobile.

Do not get a TV unless you absolutely have to! The most retarded regulation in Ireland is that you have to get an annual TV license if you own a TV, even if it is not connected to the service provider.

The local post men are responsible for enforcing that you pay your license. In our case, when a post man was delivering our mail, my wife opened the door and he asked her point blank “Do you have a TV?” We had a small TV that was in the apartment from the previous tenant and it was sitting in a closet, collecting dust. My wife was startled by this question and said “Yes”. The post man told us that we still have to pay the license, even if we do not use the TV. Numerous letters and complaints later I decided to just pay the license for one year, throw the TV out and be done with it. I was getting way too many grey hairs over nothing.
